Thank you for your interest in our club !

We are one of the oldest TM clubs in Charleston !

The Dolphin Toastmasters learning experience mostly happens at the weekly club meeting. If you want to learn more about the club and how it works, stop on by for a visit! In the meantime, below is an explanation about the club meeting, meeting participants' roles and responsibilities, and club leadership. Our schedule of assigned roles is updated weekly and distributed at the meetings.

The meeting can be viewed as three basic parts where you will learn a different skill:

TableTopics

Impromptu Speaking. Each week we give a special award to our best Table Topics speaker!

Prepared Speeches

Your opportunity to shine at Diablo 598! Present your speech and learn by doing. Each week we also give a special award to our best speaker!

Evaluations

Learn to give and receive feedback at each meeting. Each week we also give a special award to our best evaluator.

There are also special roles that are fulfilled by members at the club meeting:

Toastmaster

Main function is to act as the host of the meeting and introduce participants. At Dolphin we encourage the Toastmaster to bring a theme for the morning. Other members with a role can then center their comments and questions around this theme.

Sargeant At Arms
This officer is responsible for the orderly conduct of the club meeting, including: collection of ballots, tallying of votes and control of club property between meetings

Table Topics Master

Ask questions, related to the theme, of individual members. The member chosen is to answer the question within a timeframe of one to two minutes. This is where "impromptu" speaking is practiced and learned.

General Evaluator

Leads the evaluation team which consists of the Timer, Ah Counter, Grammarian, and Evaluators in giving the club and speakers feedback about the club members performance

Timer

"Timing is Everything", especially at Toastmasters. So that speakers will learn timing when speaking, the Timer reports the information to the club for Table Topics, prepared speeches, and evaluators.

Ah Counter

Have you ever heard someone speak who uses too many filler words such as "ah", "um", "you know"? As members are called to speak,. the Ah Counter counts the filler words throughout the meeting. At the end of the meeting he/she reports their tally. This makes each member aware of their use of filler words. Filler words interrupt a listeners attention and ridding yourself of these will make you more of an effective speaker.

Grammarian

A large vocabulary will make you a more effective speaker. The Grammarian introduces a "word of the day" by defining it and using it in a sentence. This word is to be used by the Table TopicsTable Topics participants to qualify for the Best Award vote.
